Patricia Cartereau\, Loulou Picasso… \nLa collection de l’artothèque de Vitré Communauté\, en mouvement constant\, est riche de plus de 1400 œuvres d’artistes représentatifs de la scène artistique nationale et internationale\, du début des années 60 à aujourd’hui. Depuis les années 90’\, l’artothèque de Vitré Communauté valorise le médium photographique à travers sa programmation artistique et ses acquisitions pour sa collection. Cette orientation a débuté avec le critique d’art et écrivain Bernard Lamarche-Vadel (qui en fut le directeur artistique de 1989 à 2000). La collection entretient un rapport fort avec l’écriture et littérature (Denis Roche\, Magdi Senadji\, Alexey Titarenko) et regroupe de grands ensembles de l’ « Atelier photographie français » : Arnaud Claass\, Patrick Faigenbaum\, Yves Guillot\, Noelle Hoeppe\, Christian Milovanoff\, Bernard Plossu\, Jun Shiraoka\, Keiichi Tahara Jean-Philippe Reverdot (dont l’artothèque est dépositaire de 150 tirages depuis 2020). Depuis 30 ans\, la collection s’enrichit de photographies réalisées lors de commandes et de résidences sur le territoire ou en lien avec celui-ci (Djenné\, Sanlúcar de Barrameda\, Grignan) auprès d’artistes tels que Lewis Baltz\, Bernard Plossu\, Martin Rosswog\, Israel Ariño\, Bernard Descamps\, Sabine Delcour\, Vincent Malassis\, Tina Merandon. Elle renferme également des photographies qui mettent en lumière les liens qui se tissent entre l’homme et son environnement (réel ou imaginaire) ainsi que l’esthétique du quotidien à travers une réflexion sur le statut de l’image contemporaine. La documentation céline duval et les œuvres de Laura Henno\, Julie Ganzin\, Elodie Guignard\, Vivian Maier\, Laurence Demaison\, Pascal Mirande\, Laurent Millet\, Bruce Wrighton\, Richard Pak\, John Baldessari\, Paul Pouvreau\, Stéphane Couturier\, Yves Trémorin sont caractéristiques de cette orientation. Sont également présents\, des photographes majeurs des scènes internationales africaine (Malick Sidibé)\, américaine (John Baldessari\, Lewis Baltz\, Lee Friedlander\, William Klein\, Vivian Maier\, Bruce Wrighton)\, britannique (John Coplans\, Nils Udo) et japonaise (Jun Shiraoka\, Keiichi Tahara).
